The World Is Too Much With Us

The world is too much with us: late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
The sea that bares her bosom to the moon:
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for every thing, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. – Great God! I’d rather be
A pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.

William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

The Square Root Three

I fear that I will always be
A lonely number like root three
A three is all that’s good and right
Why must my three keep out of sight
Beneath a vicious square-root sign?
I wish instead I were a nine
For nine could thwart this evil trick
With just some quick arithmetic
I know I’ll never see the sun
As 1.7321
Such is my reality
A sad irrationality

When, hark, just what is this I see?
Another square root of a three
Has quietly come waltzing by
Together now we multiply
To form a number we prefer
Rejoicing as an integer
We break free from our mortal bonds
And with a wave of magic wands
Our square-root signs become unglued
And love for me has been renewed

David Feinberg

When I Think of You

I remember all the good times
The laughter, the cries, the sorrow, and the smiles
I remember how it used to be
When I was there for you and you were there for me
I miss the times we once had
When life was good and life was bad
But through all the years
You’ve stood by me when times were tough
You were there to give your help and love
And now today I clearly see
I need you and you need me

Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours

My angel, my all, my very self – Only a few words today and at that with pencil (with yours) – Not till tomorrow will my lodgings be definitely determined upon – what a useless waste of time – Why this deep sorrow when necessity speaks – can our love endure except through sacrifices, through not demanding everything from one another; can you change the fact that you are not wholly mine, I not wholly thine.

My thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, now and then joyfully, then sadly, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us – I can live only wholly with you or not at all – Be calm, only by a calm consideration of our existence can we achieve our purpose to live together – Be calm – love me – today – yesterday – what tearful longings for you – you – you – my life – my all – farewell. Oh continue to love me – never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved.

ever thine
ever mine
ever ours

I Love You

It’s not a weight you must carry around.
It’s not a box that holds you in.
It’s not a standard you have to bear.
It’s not a sacrifice I make.
It’s not a pedestal you are frozen upon.
It’s not an expectation of perfection.
It’s not my life’s whole purpose (or your’s).
It’s not to make you change.
It’s not even to make you love me.
I love you.
It’s as pure and simple as that.

The Loner

If you can find one friend — good, persevering and true,
You will overcome all sorrow; mindful and happy will you live.

If you can’t find a good friend — live alone, like a king
who has renounced his throne or a lone elephant in the wild.

If you can’t find good company, solitary life is best;
There’s no fellowship with the fools; Be like the serpent lonely in its den.
